[series]: The Almighty Johnsons
[character]: Ty (Tyrone) Johnson
[character history / background]: here
[character abilities]: Ty is the host of Höðr (Hod, Hoder, Hodur – for simplicity’s sake and phonetic pronunciation, I’ll use Hod), as he puts it “god of all things dark and cold,” and his abilities reflect that.

He is immune to the effects of cold and radiates a faint, constant aura of cold. It seems relatively minor – his brother Anders snarks about his tendency to cause a room to be a little chillier with his presence. However, it’s more than that, reaching the point where when his girlfriend fell asleep with a single finger touching his cheek, he woke in the morning to find her nearly dead of hypothermia.

When he’s feeling strong emotions, his power is stronger. Examples would be freezing the wine in his wineglass in a matter of seconds when he’s upset over being dumped by yet another romantic interest, and freezing his brother’s fish tank solid, also when he’s upset.

He can use his powers intentionally as well, causing frost burns with direct skin-to-skin contact.

The flip side or depth to this power is that he’s never warm and he feels that. He can’t enjoy sunlight on his face – it doesn’t warm him. He can’t really taste anything because it becomes too cold in his mouth to impart any real flavor. He is cold and miserable with it.
[character personality]: Ty goes through some personality changes during the course of the series. I’ll be taking him from his lowest point, during his marriage to Eva (incarnation of Hel, goddess of the underworld), but time in the City will allow him the opportunity to work his way back to the man he was before he married Eva (barring of course, something like an Eva coming into play.)

Pre-marriage: Ty is a serious (pessimistic), intelligent loner who interacts differently with different people. With women, he is attentive, supportive, caring, gentle – everything they seem to want and expect in a gay friend (Anders tells all of Ty’s female friends that he’s gay and deeply closeted, thus the fact that Ty has 20 female friends and no girlfriend for much of the show.) His bevy of female friends indicates that he has a social life, it’s just not the one he’s hoping for. He's a romantic, hoping for true love that never comes.

He has a creative side that he channels into ice sculpture. He’s also shown to be a regular runner. His pastimes and even his work - he owns a one-man refrigerator repair service - are all things he can do alone.

He cares for his brothers and maintains contact with all of them, even Anders. He supports Axl’s quest to find his Frigg and restore the Norse gods to their full powers despite the fact that being in full possession of Hod’s powers is guaranteed to reduce his quality of life even more. That’s because he’s able to think beyond his own problems and consider the greater good for his family. He doesn’t want to be Hod in all respects, but he also doesn’t want his brothers to die if Axl fails.

Post-marriage: After marrying Eva, Ty enters into a self-destructive spiral of drug and alcohol abuse in the midst of a mutually abusive relationship. Gods and goddesses in The Almighty Johnsons canon are bad for each other in the long term - "put a god and a goddess together and it is an addiction." Their marriages are portrayed as violent, sometimes ending in murder. He loses his dark humor, replacing it with masochism and self-destruction. His grandfather Olaf observes that he behaves like a man who has embraced the inevitability and imminence of his own death. He doesn't love Eva, but she makes him feel, and that draws him back to her when he shouldn't go, even when he still carries a torch for Dawn.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Season 2, Episode 1 after his marriage to Eva, before the branding.

[journal post]:
Look, if this is your idea of an intervention, I hear you. I'm still going home to Eva, but I hear you.

You, Mike, you should just be happy you're alive, and you, Axl, spend more time looking for your Frigg and you can be the next one to save Mike's ass.

As for you Olaf, there's some hash in coffee canister in the kitchen. Take it and go.

All of you, just leave me alone. I've made my choice.

[third person / log sample]:
Ty, how many drugs have you taken?

All of them?

There were too many people in his house, too much noise in his head, the pendant around his neck was a millstone, and in his hands the gift from Dawn felt like the weight of the world. He carried the box as though it held some great mystery. He imagined that inside he'd find a little simulacrum of Dawn, smiling up at him, telling him that they could get on a plane to some warm island where he wouldn't have to bundle up at night to keep her safe from touching him.

One of Eva's emos bumped into him, pulling him out of his fantasy into spinning reality, or at least what passed for reality these days. It was a reality in which his wife sang her crow-clad flock into a trance, dragging him along. He knew he wasn't the man he'd been before he'd first seen her, he wasn't the brother he had always been, but he wasn't numb, and that had to count for something?

The box rattled in his hold as though to remind him that he hadn't been numb with Dawn. He'd been happy with her. He'd let himself think that he could have some kind of normal life... It was worth it, right? Bundling up in a sleeping bag every night, sex with almost all of his clothes on, lying to her about everything he was?

No. It wasn't worth it. Not when his selfishness had nearly killed her. His brothers got luck, a gilded tongue, or were motherfucking Odin and what did he get? He got to be the living air conditioner.

Eva's voice crackled with the power that jolted between the two of them, pulling him back to the present. He was Hod, god of all things dark and cold, and nothing was darker than his wife. He'd fall into her and soon it would all be over. One way or another.
